here's the first of several excerpts from the maiden voyage of the williwaw ensemble. the original recording was incredibly quiet, the subtlest hemming and hawing of the air... to achieve some sense of audibility, the recordings were compressed, and then, inadvertently, compressed several more times. the smallest artifact became the eighty-decibel elephant in the middle of the mix. despite the heavy-handed dynamism, the accidental prominence of one particular uke was still evident (the ensemble was assembled as a crude half-circle on a rug filled with 'ukuleles for their choosing). To stamp out such an uprising, further tweaking was applied, and the result became the first installment of the still on-going, if hardly living, project our very lives are being compressed.
